Introducing Andamans

Introduction:

According to a legend Hindu Epic, Ramayan, the monkey God Hanuman used the Andman island as stepping stone to flow across the seas to reach Lanka, to rescue Sita. The Malaysians call it Handaman and  so present name is derived to Andaman.

The Andamands & Nicobar Islands stretch along the Bay of Bengal at the southern most Part of India and approximately 1370 Kms away from Chennai or Kolkata.



For centuries, these islands remained cut off from main stream of history and so there is not much mention of these islands in history books, except passing references by travelers. British were first to bring it under their colonial rule in the last sect of 18th century.

Andaman and Nicobar group consists of 502 islands scattered from north to east divided in Northern group and southern group. Northern group consists of Andaman and southern is Nicobar.

Andaman is further divided in three parts- North Andaman, middle Andaman and south Andaman.
There is restricted entry to Andaman for foreign tourists while Indian tourists have no restriction to visit Andaman except tribal areas.

The southern group- The Nicobar Islands are not permitted for tourism, be it Indian or Foreign tourist.



Port Blair


Port Blair is the capital of Andaman and Nicibar islands. It is entry gate to any of these islands. It has delicious tropical climate and cosmopolitan population having most important chain of events in the Indian history. The most dominating colonial rule and the spirit of the independence is marked by the Cellular jail.
